Why Intern Abroad as a Culinary Student?

For culinary school students in the USA and Canada, completing an internship abroad is one of the most powerful ways to accelerate your career. Working in a Michelin-starred restaurant in France or a luxury hotel in Europe gives you hands-on experience that no classroom can replicate — and it stands out on any resume.

This guide covers everything culinary students from the USA, Canada, and beyond need to know: eligibility, top destinations, visa process, salary, and how to apply.

Who Is Eligible?

To qualify for a culinary internship abroad, you generally need to:

  • Be currently enrolled in a culinary school, hotel management school, or hospitality program
  • Be between 18 and 30 years old
  • Have a good level of English (basic local language knowledge is a plus)
  • Be available for 3 to 6 months
  • Be motivated and open to professional kitchen culture

Students at schools like the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), Johnson & Wales University, Auguste Escoffier School, George Brown College (Toronto), or Vancouver Community College are strong candidates.

  • Salary: ~€600/month (before taxes)
  • Accommodation: Provided within the hotel/restaurant or very close by
  • Meals: Provided during working hours (sometimes 3 meals/day)

Visa Requirements: USA and Canada Students

For US Students

American students travel to France on a VLS-TS (Long-Stay Visa equivalent to a Residence Permit) for internship/trainee purposes. You will need a convention de stage (internship agreement) from your host company — Talents Place provides this document as part of the placement. Start the visa process at least 4 months before your intended start date.

For Canadian Students

Canadian students apply for a VLS-TS stagiaire through the French consulate in their region. All required documents — including the host company letter and convention de stage — are provided to you throughout the placement process.

How to Apply: Step by Step

  1. Submit your application — Share your school details, availability, and destination preferences.
  2. Profile review — Our placement specialists match you with suitable restaurants and hotels.
  3. Interview with host company — A short video call to confirm the fit.
  4. Receive your convention de stage — Your official internship agreement for the visa application.
  5. Visa application — We guide you through every step and provide all necessary documents.
  6. Depart & intern — Full support from arrival through the end of your program.

The placement process takes approximately 3–4 weeks. We recommend applying at least 4–5 months before your target start date.
